If you are a fan of Godzilla and his fellow kaiju, you might be interested in watching a series that has never been officially released in the U.S. until now. I'm talking about Godzilla Island, a Japanese television show that ran for 256 episodes from 1997 to 1998. Each episode was only three minutes long, but packed with campy fun and monster action.
What is Godzilla Island?
Godzilla Island was a spinoff of the Godzilla franchise, developed by Toho and produced by Tsuburaya Eizo. It was broadcast on TV Tokyo and featured many of the iconic kaiju from the movies, such as Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, SpaceGodzilla, and more. The premise was that most of Earth's monsters lived on an island in the Pacific Ocean called Godzilla Island, which was monitored by G-Guard, a human peacekeeping force. However, their peaceful coexistence was threatened by an alien invasion led by Zaguresu and Torema, who brought their own kaiju to attack Godzilla Island and Earth.
The series used mostly immobile action figures instead of rubber suits or CGI to portray the kaiju. The special effects were very low-budget and cheesy, but that added to the charm and humor of the show. The stories were simple and episodic, often involving some kind of conflict or challenge for Godzilla and his friends to overcome.
How can I watch Godzilla Island?
Thanks to Toho's official Godzilla YouTube channel , you can now watch all 256 episodes of Godzilla Island with English subtitles for free. The channel uploads two episodes every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00 AM JST (5:00 PM PST / 8:00 PM EST). You can also find playlists for each season on the channel.
If you are looking for some light-hearted entertainment and nostalgia, give Godzilla Island a try. It may not be as epic or sophisticated as some of the recent MonsterVerse movies , but it has its own unique charm and appeal. Plus, you get to see Godzilla interact with many other kaiju that you may not have seen before or since.
So what are you waiting for? Head over to YouTube and enjoy this rare gem from the '90s!
