I have to admit that I was one of those people who doubted that the Picard series would happen. I have heard conflicting information as to whether or not the show will be set in the "Kelvin Timeline" or "Prime Timeline". As such, as I understand it, the Picard of this timeline "may be" similar to our STTNG (aka the Prime Timeline) Picard but have differences.
The Kelvin timeline is an alternate timeline created by J.J. Abrams and others as an alternative Star Trek rather than a reboot. That being said, it seems to have more to do with money --- merchandising --- than anything else.
If it is set in the Kelvin timeline, it will not be our Picard and it will be dead to me. If it is set in the Prime timeline, I'd be interested in learning what happened to Data.
