There are some traditions that quietly become part of the rhythm of the season. For me, one of those traditions is checking in with Svengoolie and seeing what monsters, mad scientists, and assorted creatures are lurking on the schedule.
November's lineup is especially strong, mixing horror, comedy, and a few genuine classics.
On November 7, Sven starts one hour earlier with Young Frankenstein, Mel Brooks' loving parody of the Universal monster movies. It manages the rare feat of being both hilarious and genuinely affectionate toward the films that inspired it.
On November 14, we get Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, a movie that seems to appear on everyone's list of favorite classic monster comedies. There's a reason it remains Svengoolie's most-requested film. Watching comedy legends collide with Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Wolf Man never gets old.
November 21 brings a special House of Svengoolie presentation of Cujo. A rabid St. Bernard may be a different kind of monster than the usual vampires and werewolves, but Stephen King's tale of terror certainly earns its place in horror history.
Finally, on November 28, the month wraps up with Willard, the original story of revenge served with the help of a very large rat population. Long before remakes and reimaginings, Willard delivered a strange and memorable horror premise that still stands out today.
As someone who enjoys everything from classic horror to thoughtful fantasy, I love how Svengoolie keeps these films alive. Some are masterpieces. Some are wonderfully goofy. All of them are reminders that stories don't have to be brand new to be worth revisiting.
So grab a blanket, pour a cup of coffee, and spend a few Saturday nights with some old friends from the dark side of cinema.
Two holidays Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving ( 3 if you count Black Friday ). What are you planning to watch this month?
Stay curious, Earthlings. 👽📺🦇
