Is Disney's Golden Era of Franchise Expansion Coming to an End?

Disney is reportedly slowing down the production of its major franchises, including Marvel and Star Wars, in response to comments made by former CEO Bob Iger in February 2021. Iger expressed the need for the company to "curate" its content more effectively as some of it is "extraordinarily expensive." He emphasized the importance of maintaining quality on the screen, but also noted that costs need to be considered. The decision to cut back on output comes as Disney prepares to release Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in February and The Mandalorian season three in March on Disney+. Marvel, which is the most significant source of product for Disney, could potentially face the most significant cuts under Iger's directive. According to an insider, the company will implement stricter cost control measures across the board, and "numbers matter now."
