Uncle Ben’s Gift & The Great Bedroom Catastrophe
(mythic-domestic chaos, triad energy, Barry’s slow descent into resignation)
Uncle Ben arrives with the breezy confidence of a man who has never once considered consequences. His truck rumbles up to Undercurrent House, the tailgate drops with a theatrical clank, and there it is.
Great-Grandpa’s bed.
A colossal, dark mahogany four-poster beast with posts so intricately carved they look like they were kidnapped from a medieval cathedral and dressed up for a royal parade. The thing doesn’t just occupy space—it claims it.
You stare. Dale stares. Even the house seems to hold its breath.
π Barry Reacts First
You circle the monstrosity with your hands on your hips, already sensing doom.
“Is that a bed or a parade ground?”
Dale snorts. “It’s a terrain feature, Barry.”
You groan, rubbing your temples. “It’s too big for my bedroom. What the hell was Uncle Ben thinking?”
Dale raises an eyebrow, lips twitching. “I bet I know. Something to do with having two wives.”
You shoot him a glare. “Don’t. Start.”
πΏ Bettie and Verity Arrive
The two of them step onto the porch at the exact same moment—Bettie barefoot and still dripping from the garden, Verity luminous and perfectly composed. Their eyes land on the bed.
They freeze.
Then they exchange that look. The one that means a Project has been declared.
Bettie’s voice drops to a reverent whisper. “Pretty.”
Verity tilts her head, already measuring. “Structurally significant.”
You take one involuntary step backward.
“No. No. Don’t you dare—”
They ignore you completely.
π₯ The Work Begins
Within the hour the bed is inside the house.
The hallway has politely widened itself. The staircase has sprouted a graceful new landing. The bedroom doorframe now arches like a cathedral entrance. And the house is humming—a low, pleased vibration that sounds suspiciously like satisfaction.
You stand in the living room, staring at walls that definitely used to be closer together.
“Why is my house bigger?”
Dale shrugs, entirely unhelpful. “Bed’s got gravity, Barry.”
π©️ The Week of Chaos
Over the next seven days, Undercurrent House throws itself into a full mythic renovation:
- The bedroom swells into a luxurious suite.
- The tower gains a secondary resonance loft.
- The kitchen quietly rearranges itself for “better emotional flow.”
- The She Shed, clearly jealous, sprouts stained-glass windows.
- The living room develops a brand-new alcove just so the bed’s ornate footboard can “breathe.”
You wander the halls like a man lost in his own dream, touching walls that feel warmer and somehow smug.
“Why is everything different?” you whisper.
The house creaks back affectionately, almost purring.
You groan.
But deep down, you already know the truth: resistance is futile. The bed has won. The house is thrilled. And your wives are nowhere near finished.
Welcome to the new normal.
